The first unabridged and complete English language edition since it was published in French in 1949. American and English-speaking readers will finally discover Simone de Beauvoir’s original thoughts on what it means to be a woman. The book was immediately scandalous because the conservative-minded felt threatened by Beauvoir’s thought-process that made it clear that women could be women without being mothers. In fact, it helped differentiate sex (the body one is born with) and gender (the way one lives with that body), raising identity issues that had been neglected if not ignored by society until then.

The XXI century is not exempt of the feminist debate, as  French feminist Elizabeth Badinter reveals in her new book. Women’s issues are still at stake and women’s rights still are at the core of basic human’s rights. Current worrying trends of motherhood first and foremost find their ways in the political arena and even the new “environmentalists” seem ready to sacrifice womanhood in the name of Mother Nature.

An American citizen, Constance Borde has lived in France over forty years. She teaches English at Sciences Po and is an author of grammar books. She is also co-author of the new translation of Simone de Beauvoir’s The Second Sex. In addition, she is a member of the US Democratic National Committee. She has been active in women’s rights in Afghanistan, having served two terms as Vice-Chair of an Afghan NGO for guaranteeing political rights to women. She is a member of the Human Rights Watch Paris Committee since it was created in 2007.

Mrs Sheila Malovany-Chevalier is an American citizen living in France. She teaches English and American Civilization at Sciences Po. She has been President of the Women’s Democratic Caucus in France and an elected member of the Conseil Municipal in a small village in Cote D’Or.

Both women are long-time friends and share the same passion for grammar, politics and cuisine. They have co-authored many books.
